Episode 15 - Pardon Me?

Reforming the presidential pardon power, going after Venezuela, and dealing with legalized sports betting.

Welcome to Episode 15 of the Rational Policy Podcast with your hosts, Mike Coté and Art Vandelay. In this installment of the show, we hit on three topics ranging from executive authority to military policy to cultural sickness. First, we discuss the presidential pardon power in light of recent scandals with both former President Biden and his successor Donald Trump. We talk about the history of the power, how it was intended to be used, and what we can do to reform it and avoid the sense of corruption it displays to the public. Next, we shift gears and move to Venezuela, one of the biggest potential flashpoints for the American military in the coming weeks. We touch on the lead-up to the current brouhaha, the legalities (or lack thereof) of combat against Venezuelan assets, and why the Maduro regime deserves to fall. Finally, we wrap up by detailing the latest sports gambling scandal, what it says about the world of modern sports entertainment, and how the legalization of sports wagering has altered American culture.
